The Messier catalogue was created by Charles Messier in 1769.  This catalogue includes all sorts of objects; nebula, galaxies, star clusters, etc.  Funny thing is, Messier was a comet hunter, and had no interest in these objects.  In other words, he created this as a catalogue of "non-comets".  Most of these objects looked very similar in the telescopes of the time, so to be sure he wasn't looking at something previously discovered, he created this catalogue.

But his work in logging what weren't comets created a nice list for us future astronomers!  This catalogue has been a goal for many amateur astronomers (including me).  Some of these objects are easy to find, others aren't.  Some may not even be visible in my little scope, but it's going to be fun hunting them down!
